HOW TO HASHTAG for Weddings – a Good Guest’s Guide!

How to use a wedding hashtag correctly! Psst! These rules are a must to survive wedding social media!

Indian weddings are officially hubs for hashtags. We may have arrived late to the hashtag party, but we are pretty much rocking them in our weddings! Everyone loves hashtags, most weddings have them as a part of the new tech traditions – The official wedding hashtag, but do we know how to use them correctly?

Using the official wedding hashtag is no joke! – With such great power comes insane responsibility!

So before you go around trolling with tags, make note of these few rules (yes there are rules!) to be a model guest when posting with the official tag. Don’t sweat it, we’ve got you covered…Check out the rules below:

Hashtag rules by witty vows
Hashtag rules by witty vows

#Selfie

RULE 1 – DON’T BE SO SELFIEsh

There’s more to weddings than just selfies! The hashtag is a way for everyone to celebrate the couple. Bombarding the hashtag feed with your selfies is a BAD idea! Get the couple in on your pictures with hashtags. Its their special day, use the hashtag to capture their moments together.

#Focus

RULE 2 – KEEP IT CLEAN

Cue in famous dialogue from the movies,  “Tumhare Ghar Mein Maan-Behen Nahi Hai Kya?”  well they’re all also on Facebook!

Did you know facebook is one of the most popular ways to search up hashtags? Care to put the two together? Every photo you tag is by virtue of the hashtag available to a huge audience for viewership. You may think a photo is funny and it’s okay to post the “inside” joke because you’re only tagging your friends, think again – the hashtag just made it VERY public – everyone who attended the wedding can have eyes on this – Damn that’s scary! Ahem! remember walls have ears, especially those on facebook!

Using a big day hashtag on a photo means that LOTS of people will see it, including the newlywed’s family, friends, and even colleagues who aren’t at the wedding. You’re totally welcome to be fun and silly, but keep all clothes on and don’t say anything you wouldn’t want the your own dada dadi to see!

#Sanskari

RULE  3 – DO NOT DRUNK DIAL HASTAG

It’s a wedding, there will be alcohol (A LOT if it’s a Punjabi one), you will get drunk (A LOT if you’re PUNJABI :p) your judgement of what’s appropriate might be (most likely is) skewed. You’ll take a lot of photos – Just do yourself a favour and wait till morning to share them! What seems fun at night might just be super embarrassing in the morning!

#You’reWelcome

RULE 4 – GET RELEVANT

The hashtag exists for a reason people. Its purpose is to help the couple curate all kinds of moments from their wedding in one place. Its not your personal journal. The ten photos of your #OOTS or that of your dog tuffy don’t qualify! Think more like you at the venue enjoying the wedding, the couple’s family doing traditional ceremonies, the venue décor – these are hashtag worthy!

#OfficialUseOnly

RULE 5 – BE ON TIME

Be on time to the hastag party – its no fun to post the party pictures weeks later. The whole point of the hashtag is to see glimpses of the wedding at the time of!

So try and post during the wedding week. Chances are the newlyweds will be scrolling through the hashtag feed within a day or two of the wedding celebrations. Here the big fat Indian weddings have a huge advantage ‘coz where else do wedding celebrations go on for days and days – that gives you a lot of time to find and post your hashtag photos!

#NowOrNever

RULE 6 – SAY IT RIGHT

Make sure you don’t mess up the hashtag. It’s the one thing you have to do for the couple, type the correct hashtag! Don’t mess it up. #Madwedding and #Madewedding is not the same thing! Nothing is as disappointing as putting a typo in the hashtag so the couple never sees it.

#TypoTyrant

RULE 7 – DO NOT D.I.Y.

Respect the tag – do not make your own hashtags – that’s just wrong people!

You will not only waste the picture (as it wont get compiled with the other pictures) but chances are that you will confuse all the others tagged in your photos as to which hashtag to use.

#Uncool

RULE 8 – DON’T#SPAM #WITH #HASTAGS

Don’t over-tag a single photo/post. Best practices recommend using no more than 2 hashtags.

#NuffSaid

RULE 9 – SPREAD OUT

Instagram is the go-to, but of course, hashtags work on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter, too! Don’t be scared to spread the love. GO all out across the web, the couple will be super psyched!

#RuleTheNet

That’s all you need to know folks! Go out there and kill it at the next wedding you attend with all this insider wedding hashtag know how! Play by these rules and you’ll be the #modelguests – the couple will love you!

#Peaceout

xx
