Limit on Love? New Lok Sabha Wedding Bill to curb ‘show of wealth’ at weddings! 😱

A Bill for them hefty Wedding Bills? Yep! That reality may just be around the corner. India is known for its super lavish wedidngs after all. Be it the cray cray Reddy wedding smack in the middle of demonetization or the snazzy larger than life celeb parties! Shosha and Shaadi are sometime synonymous. However that may just be about to change. (Don’t get us wrong, we love all the jazz but wouldn’t it be great if it helped a cause too? 👀)

What is this absurd Lok Sabha Wedding Bill though?

In order to exercise control on the “show of wealth,” a Bill in Lok Sabha, introduced by Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan, wife of MP Pappu Yadav, seeks to put a limit on the number of guests invited and dishes served at a wedding. (😱Yikes! Sounds scary!) Before you go bridezilla and start making calls, the bill is yet to be passed and here’s the full deets the MP gave out when asked! ⬇️

What’s the Big Idea?

The Bill proposes that if a family spends more than ₹5 lakh on a wedding, they have to contribute 10 percent of the amount on weddings of underprivileged girls.

It says that “if any family intends to spend more than ₹5 lakh towards expenditure on marriage, they shall declare the amount proposed to be spent in advance and contribute 10 percent of such amount in a welfare fund.” It also adds that it would be the prerogative of the government to put a limit on the number of guests to be invited and the dishes to be served, if it considers it necessary to prevent wastage of food. (We’re all game for a wedding which supports a cause, but the limit clause sounds real scary!)

What We’re Wondering 😇

How will they keep a track of the catering services of the million weddings across the country, Any bright ideas?

Lets wait and watch what happens in the next session when Parliament resumes on March 9. Till then just follow good practices. Make your wedding fab AND do some good too with these small steps to share the love (quite literally so!) 💖
